Role of Buffalo in Dairy Industry, Reproductive Disorders and Use of Artificial Insemination: A Mini-Review
Keywords:
Livestock, Buffalo, Reproductive disorders, Artificial insemination.Abstract
Livestock plays an important role in the economy of the country. Buffalo farming is playing a pivotal role in the national economy of Pakistan by producing significant proportion of milk, meat, and draught power. Intensive genetic selection has resulted in modern dairy animals with very high milk yields but reduced fertility, due mainly to an increase in reproductive disorders. There are many disorders that cause a decline in the production potential of Buffalo. However, production capabilities can be increased by improvement in feed, nutritional management, and the use of artificial insemination. The latest technologies offer the opportunity to accelerate the genetic gain in the buffalo industry. Future research should focus on simple and adoptable methods which identify the factors determining low fertility and help to improve the production potential of this species.
