The Impact of Sheet Piles on the Hydraulic Structure (Weir) Construction
Keywords:
Sheet Piles, Hydraulic Structure, Water reservoir, Weir.Abstract
Sheet piles significantly affect the building of weirs, mainly by decreasing seepage and enhancing the stability of the structure, particularly in regions with poor soil conditions. They can be made to transfer strong water pressures into the embankment below and serve as a barrier against water infiltration, preventing piping and undermining. A chain reaction of failures could result from a water control structure collapse, which could have catastrophic consequences by lowering tailwater elevations upstream. Furthermore, sheet piles can also be utilized to decrease the seepage line in the outer shoulder of the weir by stabilizing the inner shoulder and crest. In this issue, Arshad (2022) reports that the weir is not safe without the installation of sheet piles. Sheet piles are a useful tool for building weirs because they provide solutions for structural stability, seepage management, and site-specific adaptation.
